Airnorth thoughts with families and friends after tragic accident

Darwin-based airline Airnorth said its thoughts are with the families and friends of two pilots who perished in a tragic accident in Darwin this morning.

Airnorth CEO Michael Bridge said the company is supporting the families, friends and colleagues of the pilots.

“At around 10.20 this morning an Airnorth twin engine turbo prop aircraft on a routine training flight encountered difficulties on takeoff and crash landed at Darwin Airport,” Mr Bridge said.

“This is a heartbreaking time for their families, friends, colleagues and all of us at Airnorth. Right now, as you would appreciate, we are concentrating on supporting the families of our pilots and those around them.

“I have spoken with the families this afternoon and shared with them our heartfelt sorrow for their loss.”

The plane involved was a twin turbo prop Embraer 120 and both pilots were experienced flying this aircraft. The pilots were involved in a training exercise at the time.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and Airnorth will of course be cooperating fully with the authorities.

“It is only a matter of hours since this tragedy happened and as you can all understand we have a lot of work to do over the next few days. The Airnorth family has never had to face a tragedy like this before,” Mr Bridge said

“We will be continuing to provide our regular commercial services to our customers and thank our staff, our customers and the many who have expressed their support.”
