Re: Transport of pets and other animals onto Groote Eylandt

The Groote archipelago supports a diverse and mostly endemic fauna. The area is home to more than 40 mammals, 70 reptiles, 15 amphibians and over 200 bird species. Included in this group are some and endangered animals such as the northern quoll, brush-tailed rabbit rat, northern hopping mouse and several species of marine turtle. Traditional owners have spiritual and cultural links to many animals, and this is demonstrated in local song-lines, dances, rituals, art and customs. Consequently, resident aboriginal people have cultural obligations to protect and conserve these animals.

Significant negative impacts for native wildlife can originate from introduced fauna. Currently, the Groote archipelago is free of feral animals such as; cane toads, pigs, buffalo and many others. We aim to maintain this status. The Land Council is making an application to gazette the archipelago a Pest Animal Exclusion Zone, under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2006.

We were disappointed to recently learn that cats were brought on island. For some time, there has been a policy of not allowing cats onto island, except with written approval from the ALC. Cats are listed under Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2006 as a feral animal, and have been scheduled as a key threatening process for many endemic species. These cats have not been allowed to stay, and this has caused significant grief, disruption and inconvenience for the owners.

There are other animals that pose significant risk to the islands wildlife. We ask you respect our requests, and transport only de-sexed dogs onto our property (a maximum of two per household with written proof of de-sexing). All other animals (i.e. reptiles, fish, birds etc) will require written permission of the ALC before being allowed into the archipelago. Legislation outlines severe penalties for persons that relocate feral animals without approval. Our wildlife is fundamental and integral to our people. We will protect it vigorously, and request your co-operation.
Yours Sincerely
